The non-uniform shape is cast using our handmade ‘dynamic mold’, which is composed of both elastic and rigid molding components that are free to move about as the concrete sets. As a result, the overall form and size of each piece is 100% unique from one to the next.
The final form is primarily influenced by the hydrostatic pressure of the cement in its fluid state (vibration is used to help the mixture overcome its inherent viscosity). However, rather than letting the material take complete control, the maker has the freedom to intervene in various ways, such as:
- choice of material volume, aggregate and/or color;
- choice of size, proportion and combination of molding components;
- centerpoint offset, tilt angle and depth.
Zero waste is produced in this process, other than small amounts of water to rinse the equipment.
The ultimate goal is to create functional artifacts that are solidified visualizations of the forces transmitted by fluids. Some of the items we have made so far include bowls, planters, coasters and eggholders (lighting elements and tabletops are being tested as well).
Several pieces are for sale on our shop!
